In the damp atmosphere left by storms last night and in front of early rising spectators at 03:30, 259 athletes (including 95 women), representing 37 nations gathered on the shores of Lake Annecy seeking to gain the titles of IAU Trail World Champion 2015; the men's title, women's title and team title.

The long line of headlamps stretched out and lit up the night to Mount Semnoz 1644m (km 18.4; 1441 m of vertical gain) where, in just a few seconds, the American Tim Tollefson, the two Spaniards Manuel Merilla and Luis Alberto Hernando and the Frenchman Xavier Thévenard passed through. At the Col de Cochette pass, after 33.4 km of racing, the eight lead runners were within two minutes of each other, and out in front, three Frenchrunners: Julien Rancon, Xavier Thévenard and Sylvain Court, followed by Spaniards Manuel and Luis Alberto Hernando.

On the descent to Doussard, Xavier Thévenard and Luis Merillas were neck in neck but at the second aid station (44.3 km; 2566 m cumulative vertical gain), it was Sébastien Spehler (FR) who strode ahead and took the lead followed by Sylvain Court and Manuel Merillas 12 and 48 seconds later respectively. Xavier, who lost 1'29",appeared to be in poorer form; an impression that was later confirmed. On the climb to Chalet de Aulps (km 54.8; 3569m cumulative vertical gain), Sébastien took the lead, followed 4 minutes later by Luis Alberto Hernando who found renewed energy and a very steady Sylvain Court. At Pas de l'Aulps Patrick Bringer, whohad made a great comeback from the Col de la Cochette pass, move from the 14th to 4th position.

At Villard Dessus (km 64.5; 4086m cumulative vertical gain), Luis Alberto took the lead and at Menthon St Bernard, with 4 runners within 4 minutes, of each other, and a ten minute advance on the expected finishing time, meaning a good battle for the win.

Sylvain Court finally overtook Luis Alberto, savoring his 4-minute lead until the last kilometer, "I struggled at the 50th km, it's so long, I was far from imagining being able to maintain the same pace. But that's trail running, between the high points and low points one must know how to manage these moments. To be able to hang on and to close the lead with Luis Alberto, I couldn't believe it...he's such a runner!"

As for Luis Alberto, he never let go, "The pace at thebeginning of the race was too quick and the Spanish team already had a lot of kilometers in their legs fromrecent races. But right until the end I thought that I could catch up to Sylvain, right until the last meter. This isthe most difficult trail ultra that I've ever done".

Patrick Bringer took third place.

In the women's race, from the start, the lead trio was all French, with Caroline Chaverot in the lead, Nathalie Mauclair on her heels, followed by Anne-Lise Rousset. "We played cat and mouse with Caroline who was a littlemore often in front. At Menthon Saint Bernard (km 70.2) I felt good and I allowed myself to take the lead" - said Nathalie (who won the last IAU Trail World Champion title) who did not expect a double win --- on mountainous terrain, which is so different from Sarthe where I'm from, which is so flat...".  But waiting in ambush was Spanish runner, Maite Mayora, 2015 Spanish Champion, who rose to third place at Pas de l'Aulps in front of Anne-Lise. The ranking didn't change from this point onwards to Annecy-le-Vieux, where Nathalie finished just two minutes ahead of her compatriot Caroline Chaverot.

The French team won the team title, the men's title and the women's title: thus confirming their domination and their omnipresence in the field.

With a very international top 10 (France, Spain, USA, Great Britain, Iceland and Norway), the fifth edition of the IAU Trail World Championships reaffirms the incredible interest so many countries now have for the discipline.

All of the athletes, true to the spirit of the sport, have demonstrated not only a high level of athletic performance, but were also more than happy to share their passion with a public who showed up in droves, cheering them onwith cowbells.

The 7000 bib numbers are ready and the 14,000 chips in place. Still waiting to be unrolled are3500 meters of banners and the 2000 sections of caution taped to be placed along the course the day before the races and removed the day after. Not to mention the 780 metal barriers!

The 4 aid stations expect the first runners on Saturday, May 30, to arrive as early as 05:15 on top of Mount Semnoz, the first aid station of the 4. Stocked and ready are a total of 25,000 liters of water in 4000 bottles, 6800 bottles of Gatorade, 2800 cans of Pepsi, 100 bottles of orange juice, 180kg of salty foods (cashews, peanuts), and of course much more.

Four-hundred volunteers are ready and waiting to stand at one of 800 posts; in just 3 days the starting gun for the first race will fire....

The Tecnica-MaXi-Race: an event designed "by runners for all runners". For the last several months, event organizers have been refining each piece of the puzzle. The 2015 Tecnica-MaXi-Race, with its 7 race formats, will host the 5th IAU Trail World Championships. What an incredible challenge to undertake.

As the hours count down to the start, Stéphane Agnoli, race director, explains, "We arebeginning to stress just a little, but our energy is focused first and foremost on the runners. These races are for them. Experienced or novice, the goal is to have fun, to enjoy the amazing trails and landscapes while pushing one's personal limits. That said, we are determined to ensure that volunteers are able to experience the event live; this is also their event, their race. If both runners and volunteers are happy, everything else will fall into place, and the entire organizing team will be content with the result."

Trail running, an activity, a sport, a societal trend. The 3 days of races around Lake Annecy echo the growing popularity of trail running in France and around the world. With a total of 51 nations represented, a lineup of elite runners competing for 4 world championship titles, 39 national delegations present, and 7000 everyday runners from all walks of life, all will run together on the same trails as a family, with friends, for a cause, or for a medal; this outdoor race will be a true celebration!

Follow the event. The website now has a special "live coverage" event homepage that will allow everyone, spectators or companions, to follow the event from start to finish. Live broadcasting will begin on Thursday night with the opening ceremony for the World Championships, followed by racecoverage for every runner and other practical information throughout the entire three days.

Predictions for the World Championship titles are here! The upcoming World Championships, on a 100% mountain-trail race course, have already made history. Never before will so many countries (39) and so many of the world's top-level trail runners (286) be standing at the same starting line.

The race will run the same course as the legendary Tecnica-MaXi-Race (85km, and 5300 m vertical gain), in Annecy-le-Vieux and around Lake Annecy.

The Worlds will start at 03:30, prior to the other races scheduled for the weekend. This allows for separating each individual race.

Participating countries are allowed to select a maximum of 9 men and 9 women to compete.

Four world titles will be awarded:

  • The men's World Champion
  • The women's World Champion
  • And based on the top 3 times per country:
  • The men's and women's team World Champions

For the men's and women's team World Champion titles, only 6 athletes among the 9 selected per country will beconsidered when calculating the score by adding the times of the top 3 runners per country.

The upcoming World Championships are organized under the auspices of the International Association of Ultrarunners - IAU- created in 1984, which develops ultras (races longer than a marathon) under the authority of the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations), which recognized the IAU in 1988.

Co-organized by Maxi Events, DSN74, and the FFA (French Athletics Federation), the 5th IAU Trail World Championships will take place on the same extraordinary terrain as the well-known Tecnica-MaXi-Race, a credit to each organization's expertise and know-how.

April 30, 2015, participating national federations present their lists of selected athletes.

An exceptional line-up of world-class runners!

With 40 competing runners having accumulated more than 800 points in the ITRA ranking (International Trail-Running Association), the battle for a spot on the podium will be fierce. Out in front are Spaniards Luis Alberto Hernando (923 pts), a specialist at this distance, and Miguel Heras (911 pts). In 2014, having won the Mont-Blanc 80 km, the Ultra Pirineu (104 km), and the Tenerife Blue Trail (94 km), Luis Alberto is the main favorite. Americans Alex Warner (910 pts), David Laney (894 pts), and Alex Nichols (882 pts, 3rd place in the 2014 Templiers) might very well pull off an ambush. Frenchman Xavier Thévenard (894 pts), who in April won the 70 km Ultra Fjord in Patagonia, is also one of the hopefuls. Overall France will be fielding a strong team with Sébastien Spehler, 1st place in the 2014 Tecnica-MaXi-Race, Sylvain Court, the 2014 French national champion, and Julien Rancon who took 3rdplace in the last World Championsihps. Outsiders include Spaniard Manuel Merillas, Brit Tom Owens, Italians Franco Colle and Stefano Trisconi, Swiss Jean-Yevs Rey, Nepali Sangé Sherpa, South African Don Wauchope, and Norwegian Lars Erik Skjervheim.

Among the women, the defending World Champion, Nathalie Mauclair (736 pts), will have a tough battle ahead of her to hold on to her title. She will face Spaniards Uxue Fraile and Malte Mayora, each with 754 points in the ITRA ranking and the two main favorites to win! Frenchwoman Maud Gobert (737 pts), the 2011 World Champion, Caroline Chaverot (732 pts), 1st place in the 2014 Tecnica-MaXi-Race and 2014 French national champion, and Aurélia Truel, 2nd place in the 2013 World Championships, will also by vying for the title.

Other racers to keep an eye on: American Krissy Moehl (1st place, 2009 UTMB®), Australian Gill Fowler (714 pts), and Mélanie Bos (CAN - 712 pts), Holly Rush (GB - 701 pts), Tracy Dean (GB-709 pts), and Swiss Andréa Huser and Denise Zimmermann.

For the men's team title, leading trail running countries Spain, the United States, and France will battle it out, and for the women France and Spain are the two favorites to win, with Italy, Canada, and the Great Britain hoping to take them by surprise.

The results will be available on May 30, at 14:00!

IAU 24 Hour World Championships won by Nagy and Reus.

For the IAU European Championships Jannsen joined with Reus for Gold Katalin Nagy (USA) and Florian Reus from Germany became the IAU 24H World Champions with Maria Janssen (SWE) joining Reus as IAU 24H European Champions as well.

Great Britain and USA won Gold in the team event. For the European Championships Sweden joined Great Britain for the top spot in the team event.

Last weekend in Turin, the European City of Sport for 2015, the IAU 24hr World and European Championships took place with 302 athletes from 40 countries starting in the Championships races.

The course was a 2 km loop around the Park Ruffini which was also holding the World Table Snooker Championships and American Football International Matches to add to spectator interest.

As usual there is a flurry at the start with a number of athletes intending to imprint themselves on the event and see if they can stay the course.

For the first hours the lead is less important, rather the athletes steady themselves for the hours ahead.

At six hours Yoshikazu Hara (JPN) was leading for the men but neither he nor his two close followers, Vasim Sharkov (RUS) and Elov Olsson (SWE) were going to feature in the final results. Tatyana Maslova (RUS) was leading for the women and interestingly she was being followed by Katalin Nagy ( USA), the eventual winner, at this stage.

At half way (12h) in the race, the men’s order was the same but with Nagy (USA) just edging in front of Maslova (RUS) .

However, in a 24H race the key time for race changes are the last four hours.

This is the equivalent to the race starting only at mile 20 in the marathon.

Germany’s Reus had been in the medal positions for some hours but showed his strength in the last hours of the race to move into gold medal position with Nagy ( USA) doing the same.

Pawel Szynal (POL) won the World and European silver medal but was only 40 metres in front of Robbie Britton (GBR) who was finishing fast in bronze.

This was the 24 hour equivalent of a photofinish.

In the ladies championships, Nagy (USA) the World Champion was followed by her compatriot Traci Falbo in silver with Maria Jansson (SWE) in World Bronze position.

Jansson became the European Champion as well.

For the World team medals, most teams settle their athletes into their own race pace for the first two thirds of the race but the athletes begin to work for their team positions.

Regular information from the electronic lap recordings are key for this to work. GBR used this well from an early low position for their team to come through strongly to win Gold for the mens team with the USA having three superlative individual performances for the ladies top podium place.

In the European Team Championships, Germany and France joined Great Britain on the podium for the men with Sweden, Poland and Great Britain being the medal winners for the ladies teams.

Report by: Hilary Walker, IAU General Secretary
